Since its introduction by the International Potato Center (CIP) in 2009, aeroponic technology at the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board, Musanze station, has become one of Rwanda’s most successful and adopted seed potato multiplication methods. Almost 16 years on, this innovative approach continues to thrive, especially among medium to large-scale seed potato multipliers.
Aeroponics has proven highly effective with popular varieties such as Cyerecyezo, Kinigi, and Kirundo. On average, a single plant can produce between 35 to 45 tubers, with Kinigi and Cyerecyezo varieties reaching up to 40 and 45 tubers per plant, respectively. Other promising varieties like Ndamira and Gikungu also yield impressive results, producing around 30 tubers per plant.
Achieving these high yields requires skilled technicians, diligent monitoring, and careful selection of varieties best suited for aeroponics. Complementary approaches like sandoponics and rooted apical cuttings (RAC) are also showing encouraging results and are being implemented alongside aeroponics by RAB and private sector players.
Despite these successes, challenges remain. The local market lacks readily available nutrient solutions and essential screenhouse consumables, limiting scalability. Moreover, there are gaps in comprehensive research comparing aeroponics with conventional and sandoponics seed production, especially around cost-benefit analyses and private sector adoption.
Moving forward, addressing these limitations through increased local supply chains and targeted research will be key to unlocking the full potential of aeroponic technology for Rwanda’s seed potato sector. This integrated approach promises to enhance seed quality, boost production, and ultimately strengthen food security across the country.
